Established in 1883 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand, the University of Auckland is a public research university in Auckland. It is New Zealand’s largest university by enrolment, hosting about 40,000 students on five campuses located in the city. It is also New Zealand’s leading university: it enjoys the highest ranking of the country in the QS World University Rankings and Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities, and together with the University of Otago is the only university included in the Times Higher Education top 250. In 2019, the University of Auckland is ranked 1st in the world in the inaugural University Impact Rankings by Times Higher Education. The result recognised the university’s performance against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the university’s commitment to sustainability and making positive social impacts.
