Established in 1900, on the previous Queen’s College of Birmingham, the University of Birmingham is a public UK research university. With 35.000 students, it is the 7th biggest UK university. The institution is a founding member of both the Russell Group of British research universities and Universitas 21, an international network of research universities. Andrew Carnegie helped to develop University of Birmingham as a “first class modern scientific college”, on the model of Cornell University. Old Joe, the university’s clock tower, remains the tallest freestanding clock tower in the world. Its student associations give students the opportunity to practice various sports, such as: rowing, basketball, cricket, football, rugby union, netball, field hockey, American football, and triathlon. It is ranked among the top 100 universities in the world by QS World University Rankings.
