University of Calgary

The University of Calgary started in 1944 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, founded in 1908, prior to being instituted into a separate, autonomous university in 1966. A member of the U15, the University of Calgary is also one of Canada’s top research universities (based on the number of Canada Research Chairs). In the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities rankings, the university ranked 151–200 in the world and 6–9 in Canada. The 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked the university 201–250 in the world, and 8–10 in Canada. The 2021 QS World University Rankings ranked the university 246th in the world, and ninth in Canada; tied with Queen’s University at Kingston. Alumni include James Gosling, who invented the Java computer language, and Garrett Camp, who co-founded Uber.
