The University of Lisbon is the largest public research university in Portugal. It was founded in 2013, from the merger of two previous public universities located in Lisbon, the former University of Lisbon (founded in 1911) and the Technical University of Lisbon (founded in 1930). Its roots date back to 1290, with the establishment of “Lisbon General Study”, a precursor of the current university. The institution is well-positioned in the most famous international rankings: CWTS Leiden Ranking places University of Lisbon 124th in the world, Academic Ranking of World Universities among the best 200 in the world, U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking 214th in the world, while QS World University Rankings ranks the university as the 338th best in the world.
