University of Maine

The University of Maine (UMaine) is a public research university established in 1865 as a land grant college. It is now the flagship university of the University of Maine System. Situated on Marsh Island, between the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers, UMaine is the nation’s only land grant university (other than the University of Hawai’i) on an island. It is also one of only a few land, sea and space grant institutions in the nation. The university is classified among the “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity”. UMaine is one of a handful of colleges in the United States whose Student Government is incorporated.
