The University of Southampton is a public research university in Southampton, England. Its origins date back to the founding of the Hartley Institution in 1862. In 1902, the Institution developed into the Hartley University College, awarding degrees from the University of London and later, in 1952, the institution was granted full university status, allowing it to award its own degrees. The University of Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in Britain. It is also affiliated to the Port-City University League of universities in major port cities and the Worldwide Universities Network. The university is ranked among the 150 best universities in the world by all the major rankings, such as ARWU, CWTS Leiden, QS and Times Higher Education. Its library includes six rare editions of the Divina Commedia.
