The truth behind wearefreemovers

Built by students to make studying abroad simpler, clearer, and actually possible

Nicolò Branchi – CMO at wearefreemovers | July 22, 2025

What matters most isn’t what we do.
It’s why we felt the urge to do it in the first place.

When we were students, trying to figure out how to study abroad, we felt lost.
No clear info, no one to guide us, and definitely no platform that made things easy.
That’s what pushed us to create something different, something we wish we had back then.

Let’s skip the sales talk.
Here’s the real reason we built this thing, and why, if you’re thinking of studying abroad, it might just help you too.

If you’re wondering whether you should trust us with your study abroad journey, this is our honest answer.

1. The moment it hit us 🧩

We realized this might actually be changing lives

A few weeks ago, we were sitting down with the team, trying to make sense of everything we had done over the past few months.
We were going through the numbers, checking how many applications had come in, which universities had replied, who was about to leave, who still needed help. Just one of those normal end-of-semester moments where you try to take a breath and look back.

At some point, someone said: “This student who sent his application and in less than 48 hours was fully enrolled at his dream destination… how would they have managed everything alone?”
Then someone else added,
“And that girl we supported with a 1:1 session, who said she finally felt confident about studying abroad, what would’ve happened if we hadn’t been there?”

And there was this silence, just for a moment.
Because the truth is, we hadn’t really stopped to think about it.
We were doing what we felt was right: replying to messages, fixing issues, updating the platform, reaching out to universities. We never saw ourselves as heroes, or as people doing something extraordinary.

But in that moment, it hit us: maybe this thing we’ve built is actually helping.
And when we realized that… we also realized something else.

We would’ve loved to have something like this when we were students.
Back when everything felt messy and confusing, and studying abroad seemed like this huge, complicated dream with no clear path.

So maybe that’s what wearefreemovers is, deep down.
It’s the answer we were looking for: built a few years too late for us, but right on time for others.

2. The quiet frustration behind it all 🔎

Obvious problem. No solution.

You know that feeling when something seems so obvious today, you can’t believe it didn’t exist before?

Like Amazon.
Today we think, “Of course there’s a system that brings things to your door in one or two days.” It feels normal, even expected.
But not that long ago, that system simply didn’t exist, or at least, it didn’t work the way it does today.
Not because it wasn’t needed, but because sometimes the most obvious problems stay unsolved until someone decides to fix them.

That’s exactly how we felt about the world of studying abroad.

When we first talked about free movers, we couldn’t believe how fragmented everything still was.
Every university had its own rules, portals, and deadlines.
You had to figure it all out by yourself. No support, no centralized system, no guarantee of getting an answer.
And somehow… that was normal. “You decided to be a free mover, you must organize your mobility independently”, that’s what universities were saying (yes… even to one of our Co-Founders back in the days).

The more we looked around, the more we wondered:
“How come no one has built something better? Why does this still feel like a maze?”

And that frustration, that sense of “how is this still a thing?” never left us.
We didn’t start wearefreemovers with a business plan or a roadmap. We started it because we felt that if no one else was going to fix it, maybe we could.

We weren’t trying to reinvent the world.
We were just trying to make something that should have already existed, finally… exist.

3. So... what do we actually do? 🔧

Simple, human, and finally clear

Sometimes people ask us: “But what exactly is wearefreemovers?”
And honestly, we love that question, because it means we get to explain it without the marketing talk.

At its core, wearefreemovers is a platform that helps students apply to international universities without going through the exchange or Erasmus programs organized by their home institution. But that’s just the surface.

What we actually do is to make the process less lonely, less confusing, and less expensive.

We take something that often feels overwhelming (choosing a university abroad, understanding deadlines, filling out the right forms, etc.) and we simplify it.
You don’t have to apply to many portals, or guess whether your application will be seen.
You create one profile, insert your information once, pick your programs, and apply all in one platform. That’s it.

👉 Want to see what programs are available? Explore our University Finder and start browsing real options.

Instead of guessing what to upload or when to upload it, you’ll see a clear checklist: passport, transcript, motivation letter: done. No confusion, no second-guessing, just exactly what you need to move forward.

We’ve built real partnerships with the universities, so when you apply through us, you’re not sending your info into a void. You’re sending it to someone who’s expecting it.
And if you get in, you don’t pay any fee to us. The only cost is a small deposit after you are fully enrolled in your dream destination, which you get back once you start your studies.

But the tech part is just one side of it.
The other side, the one we care about most, is human.

We’re there when a student is stuck, when someone’s unsure about their options, and when they don’t understand a requirement.
And we answer like people who’ve been there too, not with a copy-paste reply, but with honesty and care.

Because we’re not a big corporation or a faceless agency.
We’re just a small team that remembers exactly how confusing it was to be in that position.

And every time we make it simpler for someone else, it feels like a small piece of justice.

4. Where we're heading ✨

A new era of studying abroad

We’re not here to tweak the system or make small adjustments. We’re here to redefine what studying abroad means.

Imagine a world where:

  • Every student (regardless of their university’s resources) can access international programs with ease;
  • Deadlines, forms, application platforms are no longer stress triggers, but simple steps supported by guidance and clarity;
  • Universities welcome global talent directly, knowing it’s a mutual choice, not a bureaucratic exercise;
  • Free movers aren’t an exception, but the norm, a mainstream, respected, and widely understood study mobility route.

We see wearefreemovers as the engine behind that shift. Here’s how we’re making it happen:

  1. Scaling access: building a unified platform that grows with each university added, unlocking more destinations and options, faster.
  2. Shifting the narrative: reframing study abroad as something every student can do, not something only available to a few.
  3. Collaborating deeply: partnering with universities to streamline processes, increase transparency, and improve efficiency—for everyone.
  4. Building a community: connecting students with each other, with alumni, with experts who have walked the path before. We’re not just an application tool; we’re a movement.

We believe that international mobility can be a mass opportunity, not a niche.
And we’re building the tools, partnerships, and mindset to make it happen.

Because revolution starts with bold ideas, real action, and a stubborn belief that things can be different.

5. Built by students for students: now it's yours 🚀

What didn’t exist for us, now does for you

When we started this journey, we weren’t trying to impress anyone.
We weren’t chasing funding, fame, or followers.
We were just a bunch of students who had lived through the mess of trying to study abroad and decided that maybe, just maybe, we could make it better for the next ones.

And somehow, step by step, it worked.
Now there’s a place where students can go, explore, ask questions, apply, and feel supported. A place that exists because no one built it when we needed it, so we did it ourselves.

We’re not perfect, we’re not done. But every application, every message, every “thank you” reminds us that we’re building something that matters.

So if you’re thinking of studying abroad, or even just dreaming about it, this is your sign.
Not to wait. Not to overthink.
But to explore what’s out there. To move, freely.
