Formally established in 1963 by a charter granted by the Legislative Council of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a public research university. It is Hong Kong’s second-oldest university after The University of Hong Kong. As its name suggests, Chinese language was meant to be the principal medium in the university’s ordinance. However, English is the main language of instruction at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. It is the only tertiary institution in Hong Kong with recipients of the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, Fields Medal and Veblen Prize sitting as faculty in residence. Research is strong at CUHK, and its research output impacts not only the surrounding region but the entire globe. The university is ranked among the top 50-100 worldwide by almost every major international ranking. With 137 hectares, CUHK possesses the largest campus of all higher education institutions in Hong Kong.
