Esatblished in 1824, the University of Manchester is the second largest public research university in the UK. It has 25 Nobel laureates among its past and present students and staff, the fourth-highest number of any single university in the United Kingdom and the ninth largest of any university in Europe. Four Nobel laureates are currently among its staff, more than any other British university. Furthermore, according to an academic poll, two of the top ten discoveries by university academics and researchers were made at the university, namely the first working computer and the contraceptive pill. Its students come from more than 150 countries all around the globe. The University of Manchester is ranked among the 50 best universities in the world by all the major universities rankings.
