Founded in 1880, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) is a Dutch university located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other one being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). VU is an open organization, strongly linked to people and society. The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Church. VU is ranked among the world’s top 150 universities by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, CWTS Leiden World Ranking, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking.
