An English-taught semester in Buenos Aires at one of Argentina’s most respected universities in economics and business — with a modular curriculum in business, economics, finance, and technology, and a dual outcome of transferable credits and an independent UCEMA credential.
Buenos Aires has been recognized by QS Best Student Cities as the leading destination for international students in Latin America — a safe and welcoming capital that combines world-class universities, a vibrant cultural scene, and a dynamic economic landscape.
UCEMA traces its origins to 1978, when a group of economists trained at the University of Chicago founded the Centro de Estudios Macroeconómicos de Argentina. From that beginning, the institution has consolidated as one of Argentina’s most respected universities in economics, finance, business and technology. Several of its founders and faculty have served as Ministers of Economy and Presidents of the Central Bank of Argentina, and its alumni and professors are among the most influential figures in Argentine economic policy and international affairs.
UCEMA’s scholarly footprint is anchored by the Journal of Applied Economics, currently published by Taylor & Francis — one of the most established economics journals originating in Latin America and indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index. The historical link with the University of Chicago remains active today through JILAEE — the UChicago–UCEMA Joint Initiative for Latin American Experimental Economics, co-directed with the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics — extending UCEMA’s role as a node of the Chicago tradition in Latin America.
The Global Semester translates that institutional foundation into an English-taught, modular program built around a coherent curriculum in business, economics, finance, and technology, allowing students to assemble their own academic path while keeping full alignment with their home-degree requirements.
A defining feature of the UCEMA experience is its commitment to small class sizes and a close, personalized teaching style: international students benefit from direct access to faculty, individualized feedback, and consistent academic accompaniment throughout the semester.
The program’s dual outcome adds a further distinctive layer — students simultaneously earn academic credits recognized by their home university and a UCEMA Certificate or Diploma, an independent international credential that stays with them into their professional life.
The campus itself sits in the historic heart of Buenos Aires, within walking distance of the Obelisco, Avenida 9 de Julio, the Teatro Colón, the storied Avenida de Mayo, and Plaza de Mayo — placing students at the intersection of the city’s institutional, civic, and cultural life, and making the Global Semester one of the most distinctive study-abroad propositions available in the region today.
