About

An English-taught semester in Buenos Aires at one of Argentina’s most respected universities in economics and business — with a modular curriculum in business, economics, finance, and technology, and a dual outcome of transferable credits and an independent UCEMA credential.

Buenos Aires has been recognized by QS Best Student Cities as the leading destination for international students in Latin America — a safe and welcoming capital that combines world-class universities, a vibrant cultural scene, and a dynamic economic landscape.

UCEMA traces its origins to 1978, when a group of economists trained at the University of Chicago founded the Centro de Estudios Macroeconómicos de Argentina. From that beginning, the institution has consolidated as one of Argentina’s most respected universities in economics, finance, business and technology. Several of its founders and faculty have served as Ministers of Economy and Presidents of the Central Bank of Argentina, and its alumni and professors are among the most influential figures in Argentine economic policy and international affairs.

UCEMA’s scholarly footprint is anchored by the Journal of Applied Economics, currently published by Taylor & Francis — one of the most established economics journals originating in Latin America and indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index. The historical link with the University of Chicago remains active today through JILAEE — the UChicago–UCEMA Joint Initiative for Latin American Experimental Economics, co-directed with the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics — extending UCEMA’s role as a node of the Chicago tradition in Latin America.

The Global Semester translates that institutional foundation into an English-taught, modular program built around a coherent curriculum in business, economics, finance, and technology, allowing students to assemble their own academic path while keeping full alignment with their home-degree requirements.

A defining feature of the UCEMA experience is its commitment to small class sizes and a close, personalized teaching style: international students benefit from direct access to faculty, individualized feedback, and consistent academic accompaniment throughout the semester.

The program’s dual outcome adds a further distinctive layer — students simultaneously earn academic credits recognized by their home university and a UCEMA Certificate or Diploma, an independent international credential that stays with them into their professional life.

The campus itself sits in the historic heart of Buenos Aires, within walking distance of the Obelisco, Avenida 9 de Julio, the Teatro Colón, the storied Avenida de Mayo, and Plaza de Mayo — placing students at the intersection of the city’s institutional, civic, and cultural life, and making the Global Semester one of the most distinctive study-abroad propositions available in the region today.

Buenos Aires

Accommodation

Universities in Argentina do not traditionally offer on-campus housing, and UCEMA is no exception — we do not run university-managed residences. That said, our location makes finding accommodation straightforward: UCEMA is based in Retiro, in the heart of Buenos Aires, within walking distance of Recoleta — one of the city’s most elegant and safest neighborhoods — and well connected by subway, bus, and train to the rest of the city.

International students at UCEMA typically choose from the following options:

  • Private apartment rentals, either solo or shared with other students. Popular neighborhoods among the international community include Recoleta, Palermo, Belgrano, and Retiro itself, all of which are safe, vibrant, and well served by public transport.
  • Student residences (residencias estudiantiles), which offer furnished private or shared rooms with included services (utilities, Wi-Fi, cleaning, and often meals). Several operate within walking distance of UCEMA.
  • Homestays with Argentine families, which combine accommodation with full cultural and language immersion — a popular choice for students staying one semester.
  • Co-living spaces and short-term furnished rentals, increasingly available in Palermo and Recoleta and well suited to stays of a few months.

Monthly costs vary widely depending on the type of accommodation and neighborhood, but students typically budget between USD 500 and USD 1,200 per month for housing.

Social and extracurricular activities

At UCEMA, we believe in the importance of balancing academic excellence with a vibrant social and extracurricular life. As an international student, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in a dynamic university community located in the heart of Buenos Aires.

UCEMA offers a wide range of activities to enrich your experience, from student clubs and sports teams to cultural and professional development events. You can join workshops, networking sessions, and recreational activities that connect you with peers and faculty members, fostering a strong sense of belonging.

At UCEMA, learning goes beyond the classroom—it’s about building lifelong connections and experiencing the best of what university life has to offer.

Visa and immigration

All international students are required to obtain a student visa or residence permit to study at UCEMA, regardless of nationality. Argentinian immigration law does not allow study activities under a tourist visa, even where the student’s nationality is exempt from tourist visa requirements. Once admitted, the student receives a Letter of Acceptance which must be presented at the Argentine Consulate in their country of residence to schedule an appointment and process the corresponding visa.

Climate

Second Semester

Late July

Early December
🌡️ 11°C to 26°C

Autumn in Buenos Aires (March–May) is widely considered by locals the city's most beautiful season. Long, golden afternoons, crisp blue skies, and tree-lined streets shifting to amber make the parks of Palermo and Recoleta particularly memorable, and the temperate climate keeps outdoor life fully alive from morning to evening.

First Semester

Mid March

Mid July
🌡️ 9°C to 25°C

Spring in Buenos Aires (September–November) is one of the most pleasant times of year in the city: long sunny days, mild nights, and clear skies prevail throughout the season. Temperatures rise gradually from late winter into early summer, and November brings the city's famous jacaranda bloom, when entire avenues turn purple — a phenomenon that has become emblematic of Buenos Aires.
