Accommodation

The University of Newcastle offers a range of high-quality on-campus accommodation options, providing students with a safe, convenient, and supportive living environment. With more than 1,800 beds across nine residential communities, students can choose from a variety of accommodation styles to suit different preferences and budgets, all within easy reach of classes, study facilities, sporting amenities, and social spaces.

Living on campus allows students to fully immerse themselves in university life, with access to study areas, shared facilities, support services, and a vibrant residential community. The University’s accommodation offering continues to grow, with a new student accommodation precinct in Newcastle’s CBD expected to open in 2027, expanding opportunities for students who want to live close to both campus and the city centre.

For those who prefer to live independently, there are also plenty of off-campus accommodation options available throughout Newcastle. From shared houses and private rentals to student apartments, students can choose a living arrangement that best suits their lifestyle while still enjoying easy access to campus and the region’s relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Social and extracurricular activities

The University of Newcastle offers a vibrant student experience, with a wide range of clubs, societies, sporting teams, volunteer opportunities, and social events that help students build friendships, develop new skills, and make the most of their time in Australia.

To help students settle in, the University runs a comprehensive Welcome Week for incoming Study Abroad and Free Mover students each semester. While activities vary, recent programs have included welcome sessions and trivia events, campus tours, introductions to Australian culture and sport, participation in major university celebrations, guided coastal walks, and day trips to local attractions such as Port Stephens and its famous dolphin cruises.

These activities provide an excellent introduction to university life, helping students connect with their peers, explore Newcastle, and feel at home from their first week on campus.

Work opportunities

Study Abroad and Free Mover students can take advantage of a range of part-time employment and professional development opportunities while studying at the University of Newcastle. Newcastle offers jobs across industries such as hospitality, retail, tourism, and customer service, while the University’s Careers Service provides support with resumes, job applications, and career planning.

Visa and immigration

International students who wish to study at the University of Newcastle will generally need to obtain an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500). After accepting their offer and receiving a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the University, students can apply online through the Australian Government’s ImmiAccount system. Applicants must demonstrate that they are a genuine student, hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), meet any English language requirements, and provide evidence of sufficient financial capacity to support their studies and living expenses in Australia.

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows students to remain in Australia for the duration of their studies, travel in and out of the country, and work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. The visa application fee is currently from AUD $2,500 (as of July 2026), although additional costs may apply for health checks, OSHC, and dependent family members. Students are encouraged to begin the visa application process as soon as they receive their CoE to allow adequate time for processing before their studies commence.
