How wearefreemovers works

If you’ve gotten this far on the site, you might be wondering how a platform with no ads, no subscriptions, and no service fees actually stays running. Fair question. Here’s the honest answer, and a bit about why we built this in the first place.

It all started with a rejection

Hi, I’m Fabio, co-founder at wearefreemovers. Years ago, I tried to organize a semester abroad as a free mover and failed. Not because a rule said no, but because almost nothing about independent student mobility existed online: no guide, no directory, no one to ask. I found a willing university, then went to my home institution’s international office, where nobody had ever seen a request like this. Without anything to point to, they couldn’t approve it.

I started writing about it so no one else would hit the same wall. wearefreemovers launched as a blog on Christmas Eve 2018.

What came next surprised me. The same problem existed on both sides: students couldn’t find the right free mover universities, and universities couldn’t find the right free mover students. Both needed a platform that closed both gaps at once. That is what wearefreemovers became.

Who actually pays for this

Simply put, our partner universities support the platform, and the reason is straightforward: a free mover who applies through wearefreemovers has already been checked against their requirements, has the right documents, and has actively chosen that destination. That is a meaningfully better candidate than a cold email, and it saves their international office real time and effort.

There’s a distinction worth being precise about, because it’s the difference between us and much of what else exists in this space. We don’t sell leads. Some platforms collect interested students and hand that list to universities, who then do their own outreach and filtering from scratch. That’s not what we do. Our objective is enrollment, not contact information. We’re judged by how many of the students we send actually end up enrolled and how good a fit they turn out to be. That’s a much higher bar, and it’s the reason universities keep working with us.

This also means our incentives line up with yours. We have no reason to push you toward a destination that isn’t right, or rush you into a decision. A student who enrolls successfully is the entire point.

For you, this translates into a concrete experience: one profile, one application system, real responses from real people, and a process where the goal from start to finish is getting you enrolled at your dream institution as a free mover.

No markup, no ads, no hidden fees

We hate outdated and unfriendly business models

The tuition fee listed for any university is exactly the fee you would pay by applying directly, or even better, as sometimes we have exclusive scholarships available if you apply through wearefreemovers.

Furthermore, there is no subscription, no service fee, and no premium tier for students. We don’t run ads, we don’t sell space on the site, and we don’t monetize your time on the platform.

We don’t sell your data either, and we don’t need to. Our business works only when you enroll at a partner university, not when you click on something or get added to a mailing list. Treating you as a lead to be sold to the highest bidder is the opposite of what this platform is for.

Every university here is one we’d genuinely want to attend ourselves. Plus, the information you see, fees, deadlines, course availability, language of instruction, was entered directly by that institution’s own officers, who also keep it updated. You’re comparing real options with real data, not scraped approximations

Any other service you see referred on the platform benefits you. We have arrangements with accommodation providers, language testing services, or insurance partners, to offer you useful discounts, that we can obtain thanks to our unique positioning on the free mover niche. Those are all services you might need for planning or enjoying your next semester abroad. Open our discount and partner offers to check what’s currently available.

Don't forget that you are also saving a lot of time!

It's not just the money. It's the hours, and the deadlines you don't get back.

Saving money is only half the picture. The other half is time, lost in three places that going alone doesn’t account for.

Comparing destinations independently means working through dozens of university websites, since no single source shows fees, deadlines, and courses side by side. The University Finder replaces that with one tool built from data the universities themselves provided, turning days of research into minutes.

Applying independently means re-entering the same documents and the same story for every university, tracked across separate inboxes with no shared view of where anything stands. You apply to as many universities as you want through one profile, with one dashboard tracking everything, and you finalize directly on the platform.

The real damage happens after you apply. Universities often wait until their deadline closes before evaluating, so a rejection can arrive only after every other deadline has closed too, leaving no room to pivot. Our eligibility check runs all year round, so you don’t need to wait for the application deadline to get a notification of admission or not. This is essential and is something that can potentially kill your semester abroad if mishandled. With us, this risk is drastically lowered, giving you a proper chance of acceptance even if you are not a good fit for the university of your dreams.

Apply first, pay last

Most application processes work the same way: you pay first, then wait to find out

Application fees exist to filter out applicants who aren’t serious, but the burden falls entirely on the applicant, who often pays for several institutions without knowing if any of them will reply in time or admit them at all.

wearefreemovers inverts this entirely.

When you apply through the platform, you can apply to as many partner universities as you want, for free. Our eligibility check compares your profile against each university’s actual requirements, and gives you an honest answer about where you’re a realistic fit. You get an official feedback, called eligibility notice, within hours, if possible. No application fee, no waiting weeks to hear nothing.

Once you receive an eligibility notice for a specific university, it means we’ve already pre-screened your profile against that institution’s requirements. At that point, you’re not a cold applicant hoping to clear a bar you can’t see: you clearly have very high chances of getting an admission letter from the university.

So, you then login to wearefreemovers, pick one university to proceed with by filling in your confirmation and paying a confirmation deposit. By this point, because we work directly with our partner universities and manage their application process, the admission rate for students who confirm on wearefreemovers is close to certain.

Curious about the process? We have tested it and it works like a charm compared to the standard, diy route. Read the full step-by-step sequence in our application process guide.

The deposit comes back

Otherwise it wouldn't be called a deposit

The deposit is paid only once you’re ready to proceed with a specific university, after receiving your eligibility notice. Some universities require more depending on their own processing, but the logic is consistent: you pay at the very end of the eligibility process, not at the beginning.

Two outcomes are possible from here, and both are handled clearly.

If you don’t receive an admission letter because of our misjudgment, the deposit is refunded in full, whenever possible, or your application is redirected to another university: that’s the beauty of having a network of institutions. If you stop responding or decide not to continue after confirming, the deposit isn’t returned. That’s not a penalty: it reflects the real cost of a confirmed spot that goes unused. A university held a place based on our nomination, and the time and effort of both sides was spent. It works the same way application fees work everywhere, except that with us, if everything goes through, the money comes back.

And if you do start your semester: you get it back, plus more. The cashback means you never get back less than you paid. Often it’s double. It’s not only easiness and time convenience: you clearly have a net financial positive by using wearefreemovers.

For free is still not the whole story

Referrals and discounts are also available

wearefreemovers is free to use and there is no markup on any universities tuition fees. Actually, if you go through with your semester, you get something back on top: once your semester starts, your confirmation deposit is returned to you as cashback. You never get back less than you put in, and often more.

If you refer a friend who books through wearefreemovers, you both receive a referral bonus. We don’t spend on advertising. We’d rather put that money directly in your hands if you found the platform useful and want to share it. The referral works regardless of where your friend decides to go: same destination as you, or a completely different one.

And then going abroad with friends is genuinely easy, as in free mover mobility there are no quotas, no shortlists, no situation where the best candidate gets the spot and the others don’t. If you and your friends all receive eligibility notices for the same university, you can all go. As free movers, you’re not competing against each other for a department’s two annual exchange spots. You find out in advance whether you’re eligible, through our eligibility check, before any commitment is made. If you’re all eligible and motivated, there’s nothing stopping you from going together.

Beyond the financial program, wearefreemovers is also a one-stop shop for everything else a free mover needs. Accommodation options, health insurance, language testing: the services you’d need to research independently anyway are available through the platform with partner discounts and promo codes. You’re not paying more for any of it. In most cases, you’re paying less than you would going directly.

The result: using wearefreemovers makes you save money compared to not using it. That was our goal since the inception of wearefreemovers as a blog.

Our support is included

And it's the best in the space

Most study abroad services give you information and leave you to figure out the rest. We work directly with the universities you’re applying to. That’s not a small thing. We know their admission requirements in detail, how their processes work, and what they actually look for in a free mover applicant.

That knowledge is available to you, at no extra cost, when you apply through us.

Not sure if your profile is competitive for a specific destination? Have a question about course compatibility or the learning agreement process? We’ve navigated this with hundreds of students at these specific institutions. You don’t need to cold-email a university officer and wait a week for an answer that may or may not be accurate. Simply submit your application through wearefreemovers and we will work on it together. As we act as a screening layer, we can give you an honest read before your application goes anywhere.

This also means you’re never just submitting documents into a void. We stay involved through the eligibility check, the nomination, and the post-confirmation steps. If something unusual comes up, you have people who know the institution and can resolve it quickly.

If you want to discover more on free mover mobility, our resource hub covers a lot of articles in depth. Our focus is really free mover mobility, as you might see.

Why we can do all of this

And how we compare to the alternatives

The honest answer is that we’re small, independent, and have never had to optimize for anything other than making this work.

Going alone is more expensive and more uncertain than most students expect. You navigate multiple university websites not built for comparison, build your own spreadsheet of fees and deadlines, contact officers who may or may not reply in a useful timeframe, and pay application fees to several institutions without knowing if any will come through. If your choices fall through late in the window, you restart from scratch having spent both time and money.

Traditional agencies solve some of this, but pass their overhead on to you. The most common model is the package: tuition bundled with accommodation, travel, or extras, marked up to cover the margin. These operations have larger teams, physical offices, higher fixed costs, and often investors expecting a return. Somewhere in that chain, those costs reach the student, usually folded invisibly into a package price that’s hard to compare against going directly.

There’s also a process dimension. The older model involves friction most students don’t need: a video call to get started, documents by email, manual matching and chasing. If you want to book a flight, you don’t schedule a call with a travel agent. You open a browser, compare, and confirm. Applying for a semester abroad should feel the same way.

We can do this because we’ve kept the structure lean. No middle management. No investor requiring us to hit a growth number that would push us to start charging for things that are currently free. Decisions about how the platform works are made by the people who built it, in response to what students actually need. We’re also based in Switzerland, one of the most expensive countries in the world to run anything from. If this works here, without external funding, it works because it’s genuinely efficient, not because we found a cheaper place to operate or someone else’s capital to run on.

The platform started as a blog just because I couldn’t get the information I needed. It became the resource and application platform I wished had existed. No investors deciding the direction. No packages with invisible markups. No mandatory calls. Just your most efficient and rewarding path to your next semester abroad.
