The International Department of ESDI – Escola Superio de Disseny (Universitat Ramon Llull) has prepared this page to guide our students through the freemover mobility process at institutions with which ESDI does not hold a formal agreement. The information provided outlines our academic requirements and internal procedures to ensure that students can undertake an international experience aligned with ESDI’s academic standards.

Requirements
REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE
- To be enrolled in ESDI in an official undergraduate program.
- To have already passed at least 90 ECTS of your study program by the beginning of your exchange. That means that you can go abroad in the third or in the fourth year of your degree.
- To be enrolled in the academic year of your mobility in at least 25 ECTS not already recognized by other means and eligible to validate abroad (all except for ‘Prácticas académicas externas’ and ‘PFG’).
- To have a valid DNI or NIE (Foreign Identification Number) in your possession.
- To meet the minimum language requirements of the destination university (if any). Even if the university does not require a minimum language level, we do recommend having at least a B1 English level to go abroad.
Application process
Academic Recognition:
Academic recognition refers to the possible validation of courses and qualifications completed at a host university abroad by the home university. In the case of freemover mobility (at institutions with which ESDI does not hold a formal agreement), academic recognition is not automatic and is subject to prior evaluation and approval by ESDI.
Students must propose a study plan in advance, which will be assessed to determine its compatibility with their degree program. Final recognition of credits and grades will depend on the successful completion of the agreed courses and their academic equivalence.
Where applicable, the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) may be used as a reference to facilitate the evaluation process. ECTS is a tool widely used within the European Higher Education Area to standardize learning outcomes and workload. One ECTS credit corresponds to approximately 25 hours of academic work. However, in freemover mobility, the transfer of credits is not guaranteed and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
For the purpose of credit recognition, students must submit to the International Department the official Transcript of Records issued by the host university. This document must include the courses completed, confirmation of their successful completion, and the corresponding credits obtained.
Timeline:
The application and nomination process will depend on the requirements and procedures established by the host university where the student intends to carry out their exchange. As this is a freemover mobility, students are responsible for complying with the specific deadlines, documentation, and admission criteria of the chosen institution.
Students interested in undertaking this experience must inform the International Department by January of the academic year prior to the planned mobility. This early notification is essential to ensure proper guidance and to initiate the process with sufficient time in advance.
The requirements depend on the destination university but it is widely common to ask the student for:
– Portfolio
– CV (Curriculum Vitae)
– Transcript of Records (list of grades of the student)
– English Official Certificate (if applicable).
The correct sending of these documents is under the full responsibility of the student.
After receiving the documentation from the student, the host university will send the feedback and results to the student generally within a maximum of 4 weeks after the application deadline, in most of the cases.
Available funding and grants
Scholarships and Financial Conditions:
In the case of freemover mobility at institutions with which ESDI does not hold a formal agreement, students might be required to pay the tuition fees corresponding to the credits they undertake at the host university, according to the conditions established by that institution.
Scholarships for this type of mobility are not guaranteed, and financial support will depend on availability and specific calls for each academic year.
Students may apply independently for external scholarships to support their mobility. These scholarships are not guaranteed and are subject to the specific economic, academic, and personal circumstances of each applicant. Due to their individual nature, ESDI is not involved in the application process, which remains entirely the responsibility of the student.
There are various external scholarships such as:
- Becas Santander Estudios for ERASMUS+
- MOBINT-MIF (Generalitat de Catalunya): international mobility scholarships for students enrolled in Catalan universities
