About

SOAS University of London is Europe’s leading institution for the study of Africa, Asia, and the Near and Middle East. With a vast repository of knowledge and expertise on these regions, we are uniquely positioned to inform and shape contemporary thinking on the economic, political, cultural, security, and religious challenges facing our world.

Our academic approach combines regional focus with global relevance, championing interdisciplinary and intercultural teaching that actively seeks to decolonise education and knowledge production. SOAS modules integrate perspectives from the Global South, encouraging students to critically examine and expand their academic standpoint.

At SOAS, you’ll have the freedom to design a unique programme of study, choosing modules across our academic departments. Whether you focus on a specific region or discipline, you’ll take four modules per semester, allowing for deep exploration and intellectual flexibility.

We offer the widest range of non-European languages in Europe, taught in small groups that foster close engagement and deep linguistic and cultural understanding.

SOAS is an exceptionally diverse institution, where students from over 130 countries come together to make a positive impact on a fast-changing world. Our vibrant Students’ Union supports a wide array of societies—from music and film to activism and social change.

Home to a National Research Library, SOAS houses over 1.5 million items in more than 400 languages, including the largest East Asian collection in Europe—a treasure trove for researchers and curious minds alike.

Visa and immigration

Generally, if a student is studying in the UK for less than 6 months they can apply for the Standard Visitor visa and if students are joining SOAS for an academic year, they will need to apply for the Student Visa.

The Standard Visitor visa has some limitations compared to the Student visa:

  • You cannot extend this visa or switch into another visa category in the UK.
  • You must leave the UK by the end date on your visa (or within 6 months of the date you entered the UK if traveling through an eGate).
  • You are not allowed to work or intern (part-time or full-time).
  • You are not covered by the NHS (National Health Service) so will require private medical insurance.

Depending on your nationality you may need to apply for this visa before entering the UK or you can request permission to enter on arrival. The UK separates nationals of countries into the following two categories: non-visa nationals and visa nationals.

You can check whether you need to apply for a visa in advance or not using the UKVI visa check website. If the website states that you can apply for either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or a Standard Visitor Visa this means that you can request your visa on arrival in the UK but must apply for the ETA prior to travelling.

Non-visa nationals requesting Standard Visitor at the UK Border will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. It is not a visa, it functions as a pre-screening process that grants digital permission to travel to the UK. When you arrive at Border Control, you will then obtain your Standard Visitor Visa automatically by using eGates (if eligible) or via a Border Force Officer who will expect to see documentation about why you are coming to the UK and evidence you can financially support yourself whilst in the UK.

Find out about the ETA and when you make your application please ensure to use the official website or app as we are aware of websites which attempt to mislead applicants into applying for the ETA from unofficial sites or apps, often charging more than the current £16 application fee. UK Visas and Immigration do not normally contact applicants by text so be wary of messages sent via these channels and ensure to check the email address of anyone claiming to be contacting you from UKVI or the Home Office.
