About

University of East Anglia(UEA) is a public research university in the East of England with an outstanding reputation for research. We are a campus university with 17,000 students living and learning together. Free movers are a valued part of our student body, and you could join 350 other students just like you who call UEA their home for a semester or year.

UEA’s research output is highly-regarded and this means that you are learning from leaders in their field. While at UEA, you have the flexibility to study what interests you and combine subject areas.
As a campus university, we have everything you need in one place. From on campus house, to a 24/7 library, sports facilities and clubs and activities.

Finally UEA is just outside the city of Norwich, a creative, historic city where there’s always something going on. Medieval streets are lined with independent shops and restaurants. Beyond Norwich, it’s easy to travel to the Norfolk coast and other major UK cities.

You can find a detailed list of accepted English-language tests at UEA here.
Just click on “Visiting Study Abroad Students” once you open the page.

Citizens of majority English-speaking countries and students currently studying in the US are not required to provide proof of English language proficiency. All other applicants must demonstrate the necessary level of English as stated below.

Applicants with IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in Writing and Speaking and 5.5 in Reading and Listening, may take any module in Economics, and Language and Communication Studies. Applicants with these scores may also take first year modules (Level 4) in any school, apart from in the schools of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing, Chemistry, and Pharmacy.

For all other modules (Level 5 and 6), and all modules in Literature, Drama and Creative Writing, Chemistry, and Pharmacy, applicants must receive an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each category.

English language qualification waiver: For students who are studying a degree taught exclusively in English at your home university, plan to come to UEA for a semester only, and who obtain the Visitor visa (rather than the Student visa). This means that you can submit a letter from your home university that confirms you have at least IELTS 6.5 / high B2 level English, and that you are studying a degree taught exclusively in English.

Social and extracurricular activities

Our library is open 24/7 and has study spaces, bookable rooms for group work and computers so you can study however and whenever. On campus we have a bar and nightclub so you don’t need to go far to socialise or party with your friends.

Our on-campus music venue hosts live music and in the past has hosted Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and Red Hot Chilli Peppers Finally our on-campus art gallery is a tranquil space to explore for free and houses works by Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso.

On campus we have over 200+ student run organisations. These are a great way to meet new friends and either continue a current hobby or try something new. There’s pride society, skateboarding, Disney, feminist book clubs, burlesque and more. We love hearing from visiting students who have joined a club while at UEA as it adds so much to their experience.

We also promote having an active campus and the UEA Sport team have a number of initiatives to suit everyone. There are teams for all sports for people of varying levels, whether you just want to practice or compete. We have an on-campus sport facility with a gym, classes, playing fields and Olympic size swimming pool. UEA Sport also organise activities for people who don’t want to commit to joining a sports team or a gym membership. These involve intermural sports and £1 taster sports sessions for everything from football, yoga, rock climbing and paddleboarding.

UEA Sport also organise regular trips to areas in Norfolk – to stately homes or for beach walks. These are £5 and very popular for study abroad students. Finally, another active initiative is UEA Moves. If you download this app you can gain points from your steps to pay for coffees, healthy snacks and other goodies on campus. A great way to get more active!

Visa and immigration

The visa and immigration system in the UK is organised into different visa routes. The visa route you will need to enter the UK depends on how long you will be studying abroad at UEA. If you are coming to UEA for a single semester only, you will likely only need Standard Visitor permission. If you study abroad at UEA for a whole academic year, or more, then you will need to apply to the Student route instead.

Student experiences

Studying abroad at UEA helped me discover myself in a whole new way. I’d tell anyone thinking about it to just take the leap. The Study Abroad team was kind and supportive from start to finish, making it an unforgettable experience.

Antoine

UEA gave me confidence and community. I learned so much, grew as a writer, and loved being part of English culture in Norwich. I arrived shy and uncertain, but I’m leaving as a confident adult ready for anything.
