Comenius University is the largest public university in Slovakia. It was founded in 1919, shortly after the creation of Czechoslovakia. It is named after Jan Amos Comenius, a 17th-century Czech teacher and philosopher. In 2000, the European credit transfer system was implemented to improve student mobility and facilitate more ties with other European universities. It is the only Slovak university to be regularly ranked in the international rankings of the best universities in the world. With thirteen faculties, it offers the widest selection of study programmes in the country. Thanks to its dimension, every year Comenius University sends the highest number of students abroad and receives the highest number of international students among Slovak universities.
