Founded in 1914 as a citizens’ university, which means it was founded and funded by citizens, Goethe University is now a large public German university located in Frankfurt. The institution is named after the poet, philosopher and writer/dramatist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The university is a founding member of German U15: the association of the country’s leading research universities. It is also an active member of numerous international associations and networks, such as: the European University Association, the GATE Germany consortium and the Erasmus+ network. Goethe University is internationally recognized thanks to its good positioning in the major global universities rankings, such as the ones made by QS, Times Higher Education and ARWU.
