Founded in 1919 in Brno, Masaryk University (MU) is the second oldest and largest Czech university. It is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of an independent Czechoslovakia, as well as the leader of the movement for a second Czech university after Charles University Prague. The university currently counts more than 35.000 students, with a good portion of international students. MU is a highly research-intensive university. Together with other institutions of higher education, it participates in CEITEC, a research centre for both basic and applied research in the field of life sciences. The university also owns and operates Mendel Polar Station in Antarctica. It is also a well-renowned global insitution, ranking among the best 3% of universities in the world in several rankings.
