Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg was founded in 1993 and is one of the youngest public universities in Germany. It has about 14.000 students spread over nine faculties. It is named after the physicist and mayor of Magdeburg Otto von Guericke, famous for his experiments with the Magdeburg hemispheres. The institution is focused on: the application of scientific methods, the quest for innovation and new knowledge, and the assumption of social responsibility for today’s and future generations. It also considers the integration of research and teaching and academic freedom to be essential principles, particularly encouraging interdisciplinary and international projects. Despite its young age, there are nearly 12.000 papers published in international journals from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.
