The University of Granada (UGR) is a Spanish public university. It was founded in 1531 by Emperor Charles V, with the establishment of a studium generale comprising the faculties of theology, arts and canon law. With over 55.000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 6.000 staff members, UGR has a powerful presence in a city of 240.000 inhabitants like Granada. In 2014 UGR was voted the best Spanish university by international students, and its Center for Modern Languages receives over 10.000 international students each year. UGR is ranked among the best 300 universities in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities, CWTS Leiden Ranking and U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking. It is also ranked in the prestigious QS World University Rankings and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
