Established in 1971, the University of Bremen is a public research university. It is one of 11 institutions that were successful in the category “Institutional Strategies” of the Excellence Initiative launched by the Federal Government and the Federal States in 2012. It was also successful in the categories “Graduate Schools” and “Clusters of Excellence” of the initiative. Admission to the university is highly competitive, with big differences of admission rates among programs. A recent estimate of the general admission rate puts it under 20% overall for undergraduate students. University of Bremen is ranked in the top 500-600 universities in the world by the major ranking organizations such as QS, Times Higher Education and ARWU.
