The University of Duisburg-Essen is a public research university in Duisburg and Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded in 1654 and re-established in 2003, as a merger of the Gerhard Mercator University of Duisburg and the University of Essen. With nearly 40.000 students, the University of Duisburg-Essen is among the 10 largest German universities. It is a member of the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr, the AURORA Network of European universities, IS:link and VDAC. According to one of the most prominent world universities rankings, made by Times Higher Education, the University of Duisburg-Essen is ranked among the best 250 universities in the world.
