The University of the Azores (UAc) is the only public university in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The establishment of the University of the Azores developed from a period of autonomous politics related to separatist movements that developed in the second half of 1975. Although not completely responsible, the events following the Carnation Revolution provided the conditions necessary for the creation of the university, which was established in 1976. Counting less than 5.000 students, UAc is a small and inclusive university. It is based in an unique natural environment, the Archipelago of the Azores, composed by 9 volcanic islands full of biodiversity.
