The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is a multi-campus South African public research university. Founded in 1896 as the “South African School of Mines in Kimberley”, it has its roots in the mining industry, as do Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand in general. it is the third-oldest South African university in continuous operation. It counts more than 40.000 students. The university is affiliated to: the Association of African Universities (AAU), the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Foundation of Tertiary Institutions of the Northern Metropolis (FOTIM), Universities South Africa (HESA) and International Association of Universities (IAU). Wits is ranked among the best 200-300 universities in the world in various rankings, such as the ones made by: the Academic Ranking of World Universities, the Centre for World University Rankings US News Best global Universities Rankings and Times Higher Education.
