Step-by-step application process

We’ve been in your shoes, literally. As former free mover students ourselves, we know how confusing and stressful the application journey can be. Sending documents to different universities, waiting forever for a reply, paying random fees upfront… it used to be chaotic. But it doesn’t have to be like that anymore.

We built wearefreemovers to fix this. Now it’s your turn to benefit from a streamlined system that didn’t exist when we were students.

1. Create your profile

Sign up and log in to your personal profile. This is where your journey starts.

2. Find your dream destination

Use our University Finder to explore destinations that fit your academic and personal goals.

Found a match? Click the “Easy Apply” button (highlighted in purple) to submit your initial interest.

3. Get pre-selected

After applying, sit tight! We’ll review your profile and let you know if you’re pre-selected for your chosen destination. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

4. Upload your documents

Once you’re pre-selected, log back into your profile and upload the additional documents required by the university.

Important: You have 15 days from the moment you receive the confirmation email. If you don’t upload in time, your spot will be released and you won’t be able to apply again to that university.

5. Confirmation deposit (if required)

Just as with any other meaningful booking, you might be asked for a small confirmation deposit.

Here’s the good news: we’ll give it back to you, and more!

Yes, once you start your semester abroad, we’ll refund you the full amount (and even add a little extra).

Why? We believe that the most efficient solution is the best for everyone. In the first instance, we charge a relatively small deposit that is four to six times lower than those charged by our competitors. You might be asked to pay a deposit as low as 99€, which is actually a relatively small amount for such an important semester abroad.

Then, of course, refunding you the full amount once you start your semester, plus an additional economic incentive, is a unique value proposition in the space.

6. Get ready to go!

You’ll be directly contacted by the university with an official admission letter, plus all the pre-departure procedures. From that moment, they’ll be your main point of contact, but we’re always here if you need us.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A free mover is a student who organizes their study abroad semester independently, without relying on an organized mobility program. Often, these programs can’t handle all the requests for international mobility or provide the ideal option for prospective applicants. So, an alternative solution, called the “free mover” mobility, emerged, enabling millions of people to study abroad for a semester independently.

No. Applying as a free mover through wearefreemovers is completely free. Along with time convenience, this is one of the biggest advantages our platform can offer you.

With wearefreemovers, no fee is collected until you receive a response to your applications, which is great, considering that normally you would have to pay application fees before even sending your applications. The more you apply, the more you pay; while with us, you can apply as many times as you want without adding extra costs to the process.

With wearefreemovers, you just create your profile once and then apply to multiple universities with a single click using our easy apply feature. It saves you time, energy, and money.
And if a university does require a fee, it’s not collected until after you’re accepted, and we’ll refund the full amount (plus a bit extra!) once you start your semester abroad.

Compared to applying directly through university websites, where you often have to fill out separate application forms for each university, re-entering your personal details, uploading documents over and over again, and in many cases, paying application fees upfront before even knowing if you’re accepted, this is a huge step ahead and is something that we would have loved to have back in the days when we wanted to study abroad, just like you, for a semester.

Yes, definitely! You can apply to more than one destination to increase the chances of admission.
As already mentioned, you can apply to multiple destinations without much struggle from your wearefreemovers interface.

Ever heard about LinkedIn? Well, we work in a similar fashion. On wearefreemovers, you just need to create a single profile, and your information will be used repeatedly to send application intents to our partner universities. Just like with the job search, you don’t want to fill out endless forms many times over, so it’s convenient to have everything in one place and use the information multiple times to be as efficient as possible in your application journey. 🏄‍♂️

Unfortunately, just as with any other online booking that has limited spots, if you don’t upload your documents within 15 days of confirmation, your spot will be released.

However, if you have very valid reasons for deferral, please reach out to us; we’ll evaluate your case and do our best to support you. Be proactive, though: just don’t wait until the deadline passes to let us know.

It depends on the university, but typically they require a language certificate (as a mandatory pre-application), your academic transcript of records, proof of identity, and possibly a motivation letter. You’ll see the exact list of documents required on the individual application forms of each institution.

Without a valid English language certificate, you are generally unable to apply to institutions offering English-taught courses.

That’s because institutions want to have free movers who can engage with their current student community in a proficient way, both for you and for them. So it’s really essential for you to have a good level of English if you want to follow lessons at an academic level.

If you don’t know which qualification to take, feel free to contact us or to take advantage of our 10% off promo code on the TOEFL iBT, the most widely accepted English language certification worldwide.

We hate idle time and unnecessary waits as much as you do. You will receive feedback on your applications usually within a few days of applying.

After uploading your documents and (if applicable) paying the confirmation deposit, the university will take over and send you an official acceptance letter, as well as all the necessary pre-departure information. However, our team is always here if you have doubts or require any form of assistance, even after you get onboarded officially by the university.

No worries: it happens! If you’re not pre-selected for a destination, you can still apply to other universities on our platform.

Our team is also happy to help you improve your profile or suggest great alternatives that might be a better fit.

In some cases, you may even be able to re-apply later, especially if you’ve strengthened your profile. For example, you can improve your GPA or English language test scores.

Yes, we welcome students from all over the world! Just make sure to check visa requirements and deadlines, especially if you’re applying to destinations with strict entry rules for non-EU nationals.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the destination country. Once your spot is confirmed, the host university will provide the official procedure you’ll need to apply for a visa.

We’re also happy to support you with general advice during the process. Plus, we collaborate with trusted insurance providers who offer packages that include visa support, making your pre-departure preparation even easier.

If you are talking about price, no. The price you see is the university’s tuition fees only, and does not include housing. If you would like to get an idea about the price of housing, please contact us or visit the partner university’s listing pages to view the estimated monthly cost of living.

On the same listing pages, you can also check whether the university is offering on-campus accommodation for free movers (sometimes they’re really amazing structures, where you can enjoy a campus experience like no other).

If the option is not there or doesn’t fit your needs, you can rely on our trusted accommodation providers to offer you safe, student-friendly accommodation options in many destinations. Simply contact us after your application is confirmed to receive personalized guidance on finding your next home away from home. 🏠

That’s very strange. If you have checked your calendar and noticed that more than five business days have passed, either we are enjoying our beautiful vacations on the coasts of Italy 😎 or we are definitely missing something in your application. In 99% of cases, it is the second option, so please contact us directly to notify us about the situation.
