Step-by-step application process

We’ve been in your shoes — literally. As former free mover students ourselves, we know how confusing and stressful the application journey can be. Sending documents to different universities, waiting forever for a reply, paying random fees upfront… it used to be chaotic. But it doesn’t have to be like that anymore.

We built wearefreemovers to fix this. Now it’s your turn to benefit from a streamlined system that didn’t exist when we were students.

1. Create your profile

Sign up and log in to your personal profile — this is where your journey starts.

2. Find your dream destination

Use our University Finder to explore destinations that fit your academic and personal goals. Found a match? Click the “Easy Apply” button (highlighted in purple) to submit your initial interest.

3. Get pre-selected

After applying, sit tight! We’ll review your profile and let you know if you’re pre-selected for your chosen destination. If you’re eligible, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

4. Upload your documents

Once you’re pre-selected, log back into your profile and upload the additional documents required by the university.

Important: You have 15 days from the moment you receive the confirmation email. If you don’t upload in time, your spot will be released and you won’t be able to apply again to that university.

5. Confirmation fee (if required)

Some universities ask for a small confirmation fee to reserve your spot.

Here’s the good news: we’ll give it back to you — and more!

Yes, once you start your semester abroad, we’ll refund the amount (and even add a little extra) as a thank you for being part of the wearefreemovers community.

6. Get ready to go!

After uploading your documents (and paying the fee, if needed), you’ll be directly contacted by the university with all the pre-departure information you need. From that moment, they’ll be your main point of contact — but we’re always here if you need us.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a "free mover"?

A free mover is a student who organizes their study abroad semester independently, without relying on an exchange program like Erasmus. With wearefreemovers, you can still study abroad — but on your own terms.

No, applying through wearefreemovers is completely free.
This is one of the biggest advantages compared to applying directly through university websites. When you apply via official university portals, you often have to fill out separate application forms for each university — re-entering your personal details, uploading documents over and over again, and in many cases, paying application fees upfront before even knowing if you’re accepted.

With wearefreemovers, you just create your profile once and then apply to multiple universities with a single click using our Easy Apply feature. It saves you time, energy, and money.
And if a university does require a fee, it’s not collected until after you’re accepted — and we’ll refund the full amount (plus a bit extra!) once you start your semester abroad.

Unfortunately, if you don’t upload your documents within 15 days of confirmation, your spot will be released and you won’t be able to apply again to that university, so please carefully select your preferred universities before clicking on “easy apply”.

However, if you have a serious reason for deferral (e.g., health or personal emergencies), reach out to our team — we’ll evaluate your case and try to support you the best we can. Just don’t wait until the deadline passes to let us know.

It depends on the university, but usually includes a language certificate (mandatory pre-application), your academic transcript, proof of identity, and perhaps a motivation letter. We’ll guide you with the exact list once you’re pre-selected.

We try to review and respond to applications as quickly as possible. You’ll usually hear from us within a few days of applying.

After uploading your documents and (if applicable) paying the confirmation fee, the university will take over and send you all necessary information. But our support team is always available if you need help.

Yes! You can apply to more than one destination to keep your options open. Just make sure to manage your deadlines for each one.

It depends: some institutions are offering on-campus housing for free movers (sometimes they’re amazing structures). Please check it out before in the respective partner universities’ listing pages on wearefreemovers.

On the other hand, when housing is not included by default, we partner with trusted accommodation providers to offer you safe, student-friendly accommodation options in many destinations. After your application is confirmed, you’ll receive personalized guidance to find your next home away from home.

No worries — it happens! If you’re not pre-selected for a destination, you can still apply to other universities on our platform.

Our team is also happy to help you improve your profile or suggest great alternatives that might be a better fit.

In some cases, you may even be able to re-apply later, especially if you’ve strengthened your profile — for example, by improving your GPA or English language test scores.

Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the destination country. Once your spot is confirmed, the host university will provide the official documents you’ll need to apply for a visa.

We’re also happy to support you with general advice during the process. Plus, we collaborate with trusted insurance providers who offer packages that include visa support, making your pre-departure preparation even easier.

Yes — we welcome students from all over the world! Just make sure to check visa requirements and deadlines, especially if you’re applying to destinations with strict entry rules for non-EU nationals.
