  • The first 1️⃣, referred to as “On your own“, means that you start searching for universities and applying by yourself. This was the workflow our Co-Founder Fabio experienced himself back in the day. He didn’t like the experience at all, and you will see later on why. Based on this experience, he launched wearefreemovers to help future free movers avoid this mess.

  • The second 2️⃣, referred to as “With us”, was born afterwards. 💡
    This was exactly what Fabio hoped to have back in the days to simplify his search and application experience as a free mover student, and that you can now enjoy now for free thanks to wearefreemovers, the first platform dedicated to free movers.

First of all, you’ll need to search through dozens of websites just to understand whether an institution is welcoming free movers or not. Then, you probably would love to know their semester fees, application deadlines, and requirements. Additionally, it is essential to consider whether your target subject is available in their course offerings.

The result might be messy and energy-consuming: 20+ tabs open in your browser and a whole Excel file of all the destinations you are going to target, plus all the emails sent to clarify information that is not clearly displayed or understandable. You might even think that with AI, you can create the best custom list for your needs. Spoiler alert: We have already tried that many times, and it’s not working as nicely as our direct, custom-built University Finder.

After the search part, you need, of course, to apply to the destinations you have shortlisted.

Every university has its own system, forms, and rules. That means you’ll often end up entering the same information again and again, on systems that are not student-friendly, through odd-looking forms that weren’t always created with the goal of having a clear UX for prospective free movers. Furthermore, sometimes institutions don’t even have an application form or system. Hence, the only way of forwarding an application is via email, which is extremely inefficient since again, you are relying on the institution officers’ response, and doing a lot of unnecessary back-and-forth communication with them. You lose time, you lose hope, and your free mover experience already feels like a completely daunting and overwhelming ordeal.

Most universities charge application fees. Even though they’re not liked by applicants, they have a purpose: to cover the costs of processing your application and deter unmotivated prospective applicants from sending endless applications to every institution available.

As previously mentioned, if you go on your own, you are required to start again from scratch every time you apply to a new institution, meaning that you also have to pay application fees every time they are required by the institution to which you are applying.  That’s not convenient at all for you, since more than one application is usually needed to have a good chance of securing your semester abroad, and this can cost up to 400€-750€ with no guarantees.
